Plans for 90 more homes on the former Massey Ferguson factory site in Coventry are being recommended for approval.

Persimmon Homes has applied to create 34 houses and 56 apartments on the site.

Planning officers said the development would provide "much-needed affordable homes".

This land had been set aside for a primary school but the city council said there wasn't a need for one.

A decision will be made later this week.

Go-ahead for more homes on Coventry estate

Developers have been given the green light to build 90 homes on the old Massey Ferguson factory site in Coventry.

Persimmon Homes’ bid for the vacant land off Monticello Way, in Tile Hill, was granted unanimous approval at a planning committee of the city council on Thursday, September 24.

The 90-dwelling scheme is split between 34 houses and 56 apartments and includes 23 affordable homes.

However it did not come without criticism from locals in the Bannerbrook estate, principally over “inadequate” parking provision.

“When parking is at its worst it makes Monticello Way a dangerous road and this is without the addition of further vehicles,” Cllr Julia Lepoidevin said, a ward councillor who spoke in opposition to the scheme.

One resident, Jean-Pierre Laake, said Monticello Way is now “essentially a car park” as there was not enough off-street parking in the estate.

Fellow ward Cllr Peter Male, also against the bid, added: “Part of the proposals of the site were to include less use of cars and supplemented by additional bus routes and cycle lanes. The truth is there are no cycle lanes that take you anywhere you want to go and the bus routes on Monticello Way have never been used as the bus companies chose not to enter the estate so these haven’t come to fruition.”

David Onions, representative for Persimmon, said the application should be considered on “its own merits” and not to “fix existing problems” surrounding car parking.

Highways raised no objections and said six existing bus stops nearby provided “sufficient services”, while planning officer Shamim Chowdhury said the parking provision met council policy.
