Savings of £4.5m have been agreed at an extraordinary meeting held by Coventry City Council.

The cuts, affecting mainly youth and education services, are on top of savings of £70m to be found over the next three years.

The extra savings include £800,000 from the youth enterprise growth fund and £1.4m from children and learning schemes.

The meeting was streamed by the council live over the internet.

The importance of the internet live stream should not be overlooked. This is the first time CCC has done this, finally dipping a toe in to the 21st century when it comes to engagement with citizens. During the webcast, one Councillor suggested that certain factions had resisted the introduction of the service. You have to wonder why. Anything that makes the workings of CCC more accessible, transparent and open to scrutiny must be very welcome. For me, the star of the afternoon was Dave Nellist who was one of the few Councillors to actually address the topic of cut-backs instead of grandstanding to score political points.
