They opened to much fanfare

A popular greengrocer says he is being forced to branch away from Nuneaton town centre due to a lack of trade.

Mike Pallett says that trade for 'Pear of Plums' has been so poor in the Abbeygate Shopping Centre that he has no choice but to shut up shop.

His lease is up at the shopping mall at the end of August and he will not be renewing it.

He says they are looking for premises outside of the town centre - but a lot of this rests on if trade, especially deliveries, picks up over the coming months.

He said it is with a heavy heart that the greengrocer prepares to leave the town centre after he opened to much acclaim last year.

"We just can't stay here, we get no footfall at all," he said.

"We could have stayed open throughout the lockdown but there just wasn't the people about, we moved to deliveries and we were absolutely inundated for a while, we worked around the clock to make sure people got them.

"We spent precious family time making sure we got orders out.

"But that has really slowed down, it has picked up a bit more this week, but it was nothing like it was before."

"On Saturday the town was apparently packed but not in the Abbeygate, we had nothing at all," he said.

"People just don't seem to come in, they walk around it but never through it, we cannot stay open with it like this."

He said it was demoralising standing in an empty shop, especially when they have diversified to offer more than just fresh fruit, vegetables and produce.

"We have brought in things like sweets, hand gels, to offer more to our customers, but still trade is very, very poor," he said.

The engineer turned businessman said they are looking to reopen elsewhere: "We have had a look around, at the minute we are looking at Attleborough, in the centre there but we need things to pick up," he said.

"It is a case of watch this space really."
