The bolt missed Shearer's vital organs by just millimetres

A cat had a lucky escape after being shot with a crossbow.

The arrow missed the pet’s vital organs and spine by just millimetres.

Vets removed it but Shearer – named after the footballer – has been left scarred and too frightened to go outside.

Now, the RSPCA are investigating the “callous” attack.

Shearer’s owners, who didn’t want to be named, said they had found other arrows in and around Gunton Avenue in Coventry – something they are particularly concerned about because children often play in the area.

Shearer returned home last Monday, June 8 and his owners noticed a crossbow bolt sticking out of him.

They rushed him to the vets for emergency treatment.

“It was absolutely shocking and I was so upset,” his owner said.

“I scooped him up and rushed him to the vets. They said he was extremely lucky to survive the attack because the arrow had missed vital organs and his spine.

“I just can’t believe it, why anyone would do something so awful to a lovely animal?”

Vet Lisa Apted, who treated Shearer at Connaught House Veterinary Hospital in Tettenhall Road, Wolverhampton, said: “Shearer was brought into us by his worried owners. During the examination, I could see the poor cat had a small circular wound present at the back of his leg, and when I felt his leg I could feel the point of a crossbow bolt poking out just above his kneecap.

“An x-ray showed there was a crossbow bolt in his body, and we operated immediately to remove it.

“He was in shock and in a lot of pain, but the bolt luckily managed to miss a lot of vital structures. Had the bolt been on the inside of his leg, he could have suffered nerve damage.”

Now at home recovering, Shearer’s owner said the ordeal had left him scarred, off his food and too scared to go outside.

She added: “Since the incident happened I have been told that there have been lots of arrows found in nearby streets and gardens which is obviously very worrying especially with children playing outside.

“It seems someone is going round firing a crossbow and who knows what pain and suffering that could cause to either animals or people.”

RSPCA Inspector Claire Davey is investigating and is appealing for anyone with information to come forward and wants to reassure the public they can remain anonymous.

Anyone with information about the incident should call the RSPCA appeals line on 0300 123 8018.
