Coventry's city centre bus stops are set to change in a bid to help passengers maintain social distancing.

National Express Coventry have revealed that from today (Sunday, June 14), some of their services will be changing bus stops within the centre of Coventry.

This comes in a bid to keep those who travel on their buses suitably distanced, without having to change the times of buses.

It comes after consultation between the bus company, Coventry City Council, and Transport for West Midlands, which has also seen the introduction of some new stops.

One new stop is HS4, which will be introduced in Hales Street outside the Old Fire Station building, next to Pool Meadow Bus Station.

This stop will be used by routes 3 and 3A, heading towards Cheylesmore and Fenside.

The 3 and 3A will continue to serve stop BS6 in Cross Cheaping/The Burges. Towards Holbrooks stops for the 3 and 3A do not change.

Stop TS5 in Ironmonger Row will continue to be used by routes 9 and 9A for the station and Green Lane and route 11 for Coventry Railway Station, University of Warwick, Kenilworth and Leamington Spa .

It will also be served by route 10A heading towards Warwick Road (for rail station), Cannon Park, Canley and Westwood Business Park . All buses from this stop serve the rail station.

Stop BS6 in Cross Cheaping will be moved up the hill by about 10m nearer to Primark. It will be the stop used by routes 3 and 3A heading towards Cheylesmore and Fenside.

Stop BS5 in The Burges will be served by route 5 for Coundon, Radford and the Arena, route 7 for Coundon, Allesley and Brownshill Green and X1 for Allesley, Meriden, Birmingham Airport and Birmingham.

Stop BS4 in The Burges will continue to be served by routes 13 and 13A for Radford and Whitmore Park and 16 for Keresley.

The following routes will move from their current stops in The Burges to a new stop (Stop BS7) on Corporation Street outside The Philip Larkin pub:

  • Route 4 for Spon End, Hearsall Common, Canley and Tile Hill Station

  • Route 4A for Spon End, Hearsall Common and Westwood Business Park

  • Routes 6 & 6A for Spon End, Hearsall Common, Tile Hill Lane, Tile Hill and Tanyard Farm

  • Routes 8 & 8A for Spon End, Whoberley, Broad Lane and Eastern Green

  • Route 10 for Spon End, Hearsall Common, Torrington Avenue and Tile Hill

National Express Coventry has confirmed that if a route is not mentioned above, it will remain unchanged at this time.

More changes announced for Coventry's bus routes

National Express Coventry has today (Wednesday July 15) announced they are altering the timetables for three routes, which will see more buses and additional journeys put in place.

The changes will take place on the 20, 20A, and 20C routes, starting from Sunday July 19.

The changes are as follows:

  • 20 between Coventry, Bedworth and Nuneaton - new timetable with more buses and earlier journeys to and from Nuneaton.
  • 20A between Coventry city centre and University Hospital - new timetable, including additional Sunday morning journeys.
  • 20C between Coventry city centre and Potters Green - new timetable, with the route now extending beyond Lentons Lane to Potters Green.
As a result of these changes, there is once again a bus every five minutes running between Coventry city centre and Foleshill - Monday to Saturday, during the day.

These services, and many others across the city, were severely reduced at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, as demand for public transport fell.

However, in recent weeks, the number of bus passengers has risen, and with the additional need to ensure social distancing on board, several changes have been made to timetables.

Other recent changes made include the creation of new bus stops in the city centre, to keep waiting passengers apart, and the introduction of floater buses, which are kept on standby in case any one route becomes busy, when it will be brought in to allow passengers to remain at a safe distance.
