A food distribution warehouse in Coventry is at risk of permanent closure, with nearly 100 jobs in the city under threat.

Brakes, a wholesale food distribution firm with depots across the UK, has announced that as a result of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic they are proposing to permanently close their Coventry depot.

The warehouse, which is located at The Cross Point business park, has been temporarily closed since April 2020.

It is believed that the permanent closure would result in the loss of 94 jobs in the city.

At this time, Brakes has entered a period of consultation with the staff members affected.

The company has confirmed this development in a statement sent to CoventryLive this morning.

A spokesperson for the firm said should the closure be made permanent, customers in Coventry and Warwickshire will continue to be served by other depots "without any disruption in service".

Media reports elsewhere in the UK suggest that Brakes are looking to close distribution centres elsewhere.

Brakes has been trading since 1958, with a headquarters in Kent - though it employs over 6,000 people across the UK.

In 2016, the firm was purchased in a £2.2 billion deal by American food distributor Sysco.

Last month, the firm was awarded a large contract by the UK Government supply boxes of food to high risk individuals during the coronavirus pandemic.
