A rugby club in Coventry has launched a fund to adapt facilities for their transgender and female players.

Coventry Corsairs RFC, an inclusive rugby club founded exactly one year ago, are raising money to adapt the shower and changing facilities they use for their weekly practice.

The Corsairs have a strong partnership and share grounds with Coventrians RFC, but say this move will protect the dignity and privacy of their trans and female players.

This Pride month, CoventryLive heard from the club on why this next step is essential for them.On their fundraising page, they say: "We have been extremely fortunate to have a very supportive partner in Coventrians RFC who have allowed us to use their facilities for training and playing. However as there is only a single shower block in the clubhouse this has caused logistical issues when it has come to protecting the dignity and privacy of all of our players.

The Corsairs is the city's first fully inclusive rugby team, creating a space for the LGBTQ+ community and welcoming all ages and abilities to play both full contact and non-contact rugby.

The club was founded by Diego Dominquez and Carl Edwards who identified a need to create a team that was open to everyone regardless of age, gender or sexual orientation.

"We are looking to raise funds so we can adapt the existing shower facilities so that all of our players (male & female, cisgender & transgender) are able to enjoy the facilities comfortably."

With June being Pride month, we spoke to co-founder Carl Edwards on why this move is important.

Mr Edwards said: "Our priority is making sure people are safe, respected and included. We envisage having a lot more games when we're allowed to return to sport, and to get people back into peak mental and physical fitness is at our top priority. Adapting our shower and changing facilities will allow us to do that."
