It had been vacant but caused a lot of problems in the area

An eyesore plot of vacant land which is prone to fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour is to be turned into a car park for a Sikh temple.

The bid to turn land at the rear of 110 Eld Road, Foleshill, into a large 117-space car park for the Gurudwara Sri Guru Temple was approved this week.

Applicants said the land, which is enclosed by houses, had become a “dumping ground” and led to anti-social behaviour.

“The redevelopment of this site provides a great opportunity to enhance and improve this area of Coventry,” applicants said in planning statements.

The site was last used as a bowling green in connection with the Vauxhall club, but that has since been converted into flats.

The car park will serve the temple only during ceremonial activities and is needed to “free up severe congestion on the streets surrounding the temple”, they said.

Twenty-six letters of support were received, with comments stating the extra parking is “desperately required” due to difficulties in parking for the nearby temple on Cross Road.

However, there were also two letters of objection stating the plans will result in disruption and noise, while causing headlights to “shine into the houses opposite the entrances”, a report by planning officers said.

Planning officers have imposed restrictions on opening hours to 9am until 10pm to tackle concerns, but granted approval this week after deeming it acceptable.

The free car park will only open on event days organised by the temple and it will be manned by car park operatives when open, and locked when not in use.

There will also be CCTV seven-days-a-week to prevent anti-social behaviour, and eight lampposts fitted with low energy light bulbs, which must be turned off outside of 9am-10pm, the city council has said.

As part of the plans an end of terraced house at 109 Princess Street will also be demolished to enable vehicle and pedestrian access.

A segregated 2m wide pedestrian path will be provided next to a 3.2m wide vehicular road onto Princess Street as the car park exit, while access will be via Eld Road.
