The new store is due to open in November this year

Plans have been put forward for a new Aldi supermarket in Coventry.

The budget supermarket chain plans to create a new store in an existing unit on the Alvis Retail Park on Holyhead Road.

Coventry’s newest Aldi would be located primarily in the unit formerly occupied by Currys PC World, at the south eastern end of the retail park closest to the city centre.

However the neighbouring unit occupied by DFS would also be reduced in size to accommodate the new budget supermarket.

On its website Aldi says the new store is scheduled to open in November this year.

A transport statement regarding the new store has been submitted to Coventry City Council by Connect Consultants.

In November 2018 Currys PC World featuring Carphone Warehouse moved its Coventry operation from the Alvis Retail Park to a bigger home.

The retail outlet made move across the city to the Arena Park shopping centre on Classic Drive.

The new Currys PC World superstore is around twice the size of the old store on the Alvis site.

The Alvis Retail Park is home to B&Q, Harveys, Carpet Right, Sofology, DFS, a drive-thru McDonald’s, a Morrisons petrol filling station and a Morrisons supermarket.

The new Aldi would have a total ground floor area of 1,847 sq m and a mezzanine measuring 120 sq m.

The woman who served me at Morrisons this evening seemed to think she was working at Aldi? She HURLED my shopping across the ramp. That was after she asked the woman in front of me for I.D. even though she clearly wasn't a day under 45! :clown:

I had my bus pass ready just in case she asked me for I.D. and was a bit offended when she didn't.

Mystery over new Aldi store planned in Coventry

Image

Mystery surrounds the opening of Aldi’s sixth Coventry store, which was due to open at the Alvis Retail Park in November this year.

In May CoventryLive revealed the budget supermarket chain’s plans to add to its portfolio in the city.

In May the proposed Alvis Retail Park store was listed on the Aldi website - on a page entitled ‘Coming soon to a town near you! New stores and fresh career opportunities’.

It said the new store was scheduled to open in November this year.

However the Alvis Retail Park store is no longer listed among forthcoming store openings and no work has yet begun at the site.

Plans were submitted to Coventry City Council to create a new store in an existing unit on the Alvis Retail Park on Holyhead Road.

The plans related to the unit formerly occupied by Currys PC World, at the south eastern end of the retail park closest to the city centre.

The neighbouring unit occupied by DFS would also be reduced in size to accommodate the new budget supermarket.

Aldi has been contacted for comment on its plans regarding the opening of the Alvis Retail Park store.

Aldi confirms it expects to open sixth Coventry store this year

Last summer, Aldi announced it was looking for 18 new store locations in West Midlands – including in Birmingham, Dudley, and Wolverhampton – as part of its longer-term expansion plans. In November last year Aldi confirmed it was on course to open its sixth store in Coventry at the Alvis Retail Park.

The plans related to the unit formerly occupied by Currys PC World, at the south eastern end of the retail park closest to the city centre.

There had been some uncertainty over the future of the project after it was no longer listed among forthcoming Aldi store openings.

The opening has certainly been delayed. In May 2020 the proposed Alvis Retail Park store was listed on the Aldi website - on a page entitled ‘Coming soon to a town near you! New stores and fresh career opportunities’.

It said the new store was scheduled to open in November 2020.

That month a spokesman for the budget supermarket chain told CoventryLive Aldi remained committed to the project and that it was still going through the planning process.

I pass it several times a week and there's no sign of ANY work being done, they haven't even taken down the Currys sign. :clown:

In fact there's more progress at the proposed Lidl site directly opposite!

Aldi is asking people to register their interest now for roles at its next new store in Coventry

Image

Aldi is currently inviting people to register their interest for roles at its next new store in Coventry - which is set to open sometime this year.

Aldi expects to open its sixth store in Coventry later this year on the Alvis Retail Park not far from the city centre.

In April an Aldi spokesman told CoventryLive there was no specific update at that time on the opening of the Alvis Retail Park store.

Work has yet to start on the store, which will be located in the former Curry’s PC World outlet.

Aldi previously advertised for a number of roles at the Alvis Retail Park store and offered people the chance to register their interest for other roles.

Now that recruitment drive has been expanded with people being given the chance to register their interest in seven roles being advertised.

It is not known how many people in total Aldi is looking to hire at the new store.

The roles range from career starter to deputy manager.

Aldi accuses city council of dragging its heels over plans for its sixth Coventry store

Image

Budget supermarket giant Aldi has accused Coventry City Council of dragging its heels over granting planning permission for its sixth Coventry store.

The next Aldi planned for Coventry is set to be at the Alvis Retail Park on Holyhead Road but the retail chain has criticised the council for its delay in determining the application.

It has urged it to make its mind up and said that failing to do so could put the project itself and the 50 jobs it is set to create at risk.

The new store, which would be in the former Currys PC World store at the city centre end of the Alvis Retail Park, has already been delayed.

When plans were put forward by Aldi in March 2020, the retailer said it hoped to open it in November that year.

An Aldi spokesman told CoventryLive: “Aldi is committed to investing in Coventry. We have spent over a year working with the council and the site owner to deliver a scheme that represents a multi-million-pound investment into the local Coventry economy.

“This new store would create up to 50 new high-paid jobs and provide local people with additional choice when doing their grocery shopping.

“Since our planning application was submitted in March 2020, we have amended the scheme and provided significant additional funding to tackle air quality.”

The spokesman added: “The delay from the council puts at risk our investment here in Coventry, which in turn risks new jobs which local people would be able to access.

“We urge the council to determine this application as soon as possible to enable an empty retail store to be regenerated to provide local jobs and investment into the Coventry economy.”

Aldi still awaiting green light for new Coventry store

Plans have been submitted to Coventry City Council which would see a new store built at Alvis Retail Park in Coventry and an extension to Aldi’s Radford Road store.

The new store at Alvis Retail Park, close to the city centre, will take over the former Curry's unit on the shopping precinct and will be the sixth supermarket in the city.

However, the company is still waiting for the official nod from Coventry City Council for the plans which were fist submitted in March 2020.

Speaking about the plans, an Aldi spokesman today (October 27) said: "Aldi is committed to investing in Coventry having submitted plans for both our Alvis Retail Park and Radford Road stores.

"Our plans will bring over 60 new jobs to Coventry, as well as further choice for Coventry customers.

"We hope to hear from Coventry Council in the coming weeks so we can progress with our investment in Coventry."
