Borough council bosses say more people will now be able to attend burials across Nuneaton and Bedworth.

As of this today, the number of people allowed to pay their respects will increase to six at the graveside and a further ten within a reasonable distance - around 5m.

Previously the council's guidance was just ten due to lockdown restrictions.

Fury was caused when 150 mourners turned up at a traveller funeral in Bedworth.

But Cllr Ian Lloyd, cabinet member responsible for cemeteries at the Town Hall, thanked the majority of people who have stuck to the rules.

Despite the change in mourner numbers, the Town Hall says that all other requirements set in place remain the same in line with updated government guidelines.

  • Adequate distance should be observed when travelling together to the cemetery.

  • Individuals displaying symptoms should isolate and not attend.

  • Those who are vulnerable or high risk are advised to remain safe however if attending funerals, they should be supported by making other attendees aware.

  • Backfilling of graves can only be carried out by cemetery operatives and observed at a safe distance as required.

  • These measures are in place to ensure the safety of families and employees present at a funeral.
The council was keen to reiterate the government message to people to stay alert and stay at home as much as possible.
