A Coventry care home has been slammed by inspectors - saying it is leaving elderly people at risk.

Hawthorne House in Jardine Crescent has been put into special measures after a Care Quality Commission report found it to be inadequate.

In the report, published earlier this month, the CQC found that people at the home, which provides care for people with dementia and physical disabilities, were not safe and were at risk of avoidable harm.

Hawthorne House was found to be inadequate overall, and inadequate in terms of safety and being well-led, while it was found to require improvement in being effective, caring and responsive.

Inspectors found that “unexplained bruising” was not consistently investigated and that accidents were not consistently investigated to protect people from avoidable harm.

One person had seven falls in February this year, which hadn’t been investigated.

Inspectors found no evidence that people had been harmed, however they did find that people weren’t protected from the risk of potential harm.

Further criticisms included:

  • A person who had lived at the home since 2017 did not have equipment to protect them from the risk of sore skin
  • Medicines were not managed safely and controlled medicines were not monitored safely
  • Systems failed to ensure people had their medicines as prescribed
  • People were at risk of not receiving the care they needed, when they needed it
There were also issues with staffing. Residents and families told inspectors that there was not always enough staff available, and staff themselves reported that they had raised concerns.

The report added: “Inspectors saw staff were task focused and were sometimes brisk with people because they lacked the time to spend supporting them.”

Hawthorne House is a residential care home which, at the time of the inspection, was providing personal and nursing care to 92 people. The service can support up to 102 people.
