A £150 council tax discount is to be rolled out in Coventry this month to support the most vulnerable residents during the coronavirus outbreak.

Every working age household in receipt of council tax support will automatically receive a £150 reduction in their council tax bill, while bills less than £150 will reduce to zero.

Around 17,000 households in Coventry are estimated to benefit from the scheme.

New bills will be sent before the end of May.

The money has been made available to the city council by the government as part of a £500 million council tax hardship fund to deliver relief to taxpayers in their area.

Coventry City Council has been given £3.73m to apply discounts to residents’ bills.

Councillor John Mutton, cabinet member for finance, said: “We know what a difficult time this is for many Coventry people and the council is doing everything it can in line with the government’s instructions to try and ease some of the financial impacts of the Covid-19 situation.

“My strong advice is for anyone who finds themselves in financial difficulty and is concerned about paying their council tax bill that they should contact the council for advice.”

Any remaining balance from the £3.73m funding will be used to provide the same £150 support to anyone of working age needing to claim council tax support at any point during 2020/21.

Any balance remaining beyond this will be used to boost the council’s Local Welfare Assistance schemes.

The council said a further 2,000 tax-payers have had their payments deferred until June to delay the immediate pressure of making council tax payments.

For advice, call 024 7683 1111 or email counciltax@coventry.gov.uk putting COVID-19 in the email.

Which residents in Nuneaton and Bedworth can get £150 off their Council Tax bills

Council Tax discount will be given to more than 5,000 struggling households across Nuneaton and Bedworth to help them during the coronavirus lockdown.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has been given £1.1m the government as part of a £500 million council tax hardship fund to deliver relief to taxpayers in their area.

There are a total of 5,365 people that are eligible for help with their bills.

Now the Town Hall is in the process of sorting out new bills for those who are set to receive the discount.

A borough council spokesman said: "This applies to those currently on local council tax support - new letters and bills to customers will be sent out shortly so there will be no need for them to apply for the fund themselves.

"However, if they do not have a bank account registered with us for Direct Debits they will need to follow the instructions on the letter enclosed with their new bill to claim the refund back."
