Coventry's University Hospital has responded to online criticism surrounding Thursday night's Clap for Carers and says it "understands the importance of leading by example".

People stood outside the hospital in Walsgrave to take part in the weekly show of admiration and thanks to all medical staff involved in the fight against Covid-19.

The hospital shared a number of photos on its social media channels but some reacted negatively, saying those taking part were not adhering to social distancing guidelines.

Following some of the criticism on social media, a reply was posted by UHCW's own account on its Facebook post which read: "We were overwhelmed by the turnout to Clap for Carers at University Hospital tonight.

"We fully take on board the comments/feedback about social distancing and will ensure that additional measures are put in place for future weeks.

"Please note we will be deleting the post from our social media channels in the next 30 minutes. Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support at this time."

In a statement, a spokesman said: "Yesterday evening UHCW NHS Trust received incredible backing from our emergency service colleagues during the Clap for Carers celebrations at University Hospital in Coventry and the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby.

“The Trust shared these celebrations on our social media channels to say thank you and it was obvious that social distancing measures were not being observed by some spectators at University Hospital.

“We fully take on board the comments received and understand the importance of leading by example. We are currently reviewing additional measures to ensure appropriate social distancing is enforced at future celebrations.

“It is vital that anybody who attends must follow social distancing measures to keep themselves and others safe.

“Clap for Carers has really captured the hearts and minds of our staff and we would like to thank our communities and members of the public for their ongoing support during these unprecedented times.”
