A teenage thug threatened a taxi driver with a brick during a robbery and then smashed the cab's windscreen in a string of similar robberies.

Asif Khan had hailed the taxi in Coventry and asked to be taken to Sheldon, and after being dropped off, he reached through the driver’s window and grabbed his money box.

When the driver tried to stop him, 18-year-old Khan threatened him with the brick before smashing the car window and running off.

The victim flagged down a police car and following a search of the area, Khan was found and arrested nearby.

That incident on July 27 last year was the last of three robberies committed by Khan.

He began targeting taxi drivers on July 6 and again on July 25 when, on both occasions, he called a taxi to collect him from Star City.

Once dropped off, he would threaten the driver and steal their takings.

Khan, of Alum Rock Road, Alum Rock, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to robbery, two counts of theft, two counts of assault and criminal damage and was sentenced to three years in a young offenders Institution.

Detective Sergeant Tom Lyons, from West Midlands Police, said: "This was a horrifying experience for the victims while going about their normal line of work.

“We are satisfied with the sentence and I hope it offers reassurance to taxi drivers that we will take action."
