The latest on bin collections in Coventry as garden waste suspension extended

Image

Coventry residents will have to wait another week for their garden waste to be collected.

Coventry City Council has announced the suspension of brown-lidded garden waste bins will now continue until April 28.

It comes as the council's waste and recycling team says it is trying to ensure minimal disruption during the coronavirus lockdown.

A message on the council's website reads: "In the light of the challenges raised by Coronavirus, our waste and recycling service are working hard to ensure the service continues with minimal disruption.

"So, if you have had your bin collection missed, please leave it out. Our crews will be returning to pick them up throughout the week and into the weekend. Thank you for your patience."

The council's website states: "We’ve extended the suspension of brown-lidded garden waste bins for one more week until 28 April so that we can continue to prioritise household and recycling collections. From 28 April , we will start to collect garden waste brown-lidded bins again."

The council's website adds: "Our bulky waste collection service is currently suspended. Customers who have already paid for a collection will get a full refund."

Update given on when London Road tip may re-open

Image

The London Road tip in Coventry is likely to remain closed until the end of lockdown, a top council boss has admitted.

The tip closed in March due to “overwhelming demand” and visitors not abiding to social distancing measures whilst the country tackles the coronavirus.

Garden waste collections have also been suspended for the past two weeks, meaning residents have been unable to dispose of many items.

Council bosses are discussing how and when the tip will operate again, although this will not be until the start of May at the earliest.

Andrew Walster, the head of streetscene and regulatory services at the city council, said: “We have been discussing the tip both nationally and regionally and when they will open.

“They have been closed across the country and we are unlikely to re-open them I don’t think until the end of the current lockdown.

“We have already started working out how the tip might open with restricted numbers but it is not an essential journey for the time being so it is not one we should be encouraging.”

Garden waste collections are expected to begin again next Tuesday (April 28).

Coventry's tip to reopen with strict new rules

Image

Coventry’s London Road tip is to reopen with strict new rules from Monday, May 18, it has been announced.

Council bosses say they are expecting the site to be “extremely busy” and advising residents to only make a visit “if it’s necessary”.

A string of strict measures have been drafted up to minimise the number of people in attendance at any one time.

It includes:

  • Residents having to book a slot by using the booking form at http://www.coventry.gov.uk/booktip.
  • Residents will have to provide proof of residency as the centre is only available to those who live in Coventry.
  • Vans and large trailers are banned from entering.
  • Only one person per vehicle is permitted.
Those booking a slot will need to enter their car registration number so on-site security personnel will be able to check that visitors to the centre have booked.

People turning up for pre-booked slots will be asked to bring proof of residency through a closed window before they are permitted in – this can be a recent tax bill or a driving licence.

Anyone who attempts to enter the site without a booking slot will be refused entry, the city council said.

To minimise traffic outside the centre, people will also be asked to arrive at the site no more than 10 minutes before their allocated time.

Once inside, all visitors must follow the social distancing guidelines by remaining 2m (6ft) apart at all times.

Anyone who doesn’t follow the rules or is aggressive to staff will also be removed from the site, bosses have warned.

As an alternative, the council’s bulky waste collection service will also be restarting on Monday, May 18.

Residents can book a collection by visiting http://www.coventry.gov.uk/info/69/rubb ... ky_items/2.

More information about booking a visit can be found at http://www.coventry.gov.uk/tipbooking
