Train services across the UK are set to be radically reduced as the nation battles the coronavirus outbreak.

As a result, train travellers at Coventry Railway Station can expect to see big changes over the coming days.

The number of train users has declined rapidly in March, as a large number of workplaces have closed their doors to combat the spread of illness and many people are currently in isolation.

And, with fewer people looking to travel, the train companies have today (Friday, March 20) announced that changes are coming.

The finer details of the new timetables are still being ironed out, but passengers are being warned that it will result in far fewer trains running as of Monday (March 23).

The main operator out of Coventry’s station is Avanti West Coast, who also run the station itself.

Today, Avanti has confirmed that the existing number of services - three northbound to Birmingham and beyond, and three southbound to London Euston, will be reduced.

Instead, there will be just one train an hour in each direction.

The exact time of these services is not yet known, but it has been confirmed that they will call at London Euston, Milton Keynes, Rugby, Coventry, Birmingham International, Birmingham New Street, Sandwell and Dudley and Wolverhampton.

It has been confirmed that a small number of trains will call at Nuneaton, Tamworth, and Lichfield “at key times.”

The full timetable will be available to view from midday on Sunday.

West Midlands Trains, who operate both West Midlands Railway services from Leamington to Nuneaton, and London Northwestern Services from Euston to Birmingham New Street, have revealed that they will be axing almost half of their weekday services.

It comes as they anticipate staff shortages as a result of illness, and the drop in demand for trains at this time.

However, they have pledged to keep a number of services running, to enable essential workers such as healthcare professionals, to be able to continue their tasks.

Though the timetable won’t be unveiled until Sunday, it is anticipated that Coventry will see four trains an hour running from Birmingham to Northampton.

The Nuneaton line meanwhile should be unaffected.

CrossCountry has announced that they will be running fewer services across the UK.

Currently, they only run one train an hour between Manchester Piccadilly and Bournemouth, via Coventry.

At this time, it is expected that this route will remain unchanged.
