Coventry's hospital bans children and elderly as it issues tight visiting restrictions

Coventry’s hospital has announced tighter visiting restrictions in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

The restrictions are in place at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire as of today (March 18), and will see limits on both the number of visitors allowed to see patients and the time in which they can do so.

In a statement, which was shared on social media as well as online, the hospital said the limitations are being put in place to “protect patients and staff”.

They are also asking visitors to think of other ways of keeping in touch with their loved ones, such as phone calls.

No children under 12 will be permitted to visit the hospital, and only one visitor will be allowed per patient.

Those over 70 have also been asked to stay away.

The full rules from the hospital are below:

Do not visit our hospitals or any healthcare setting if you are:

- unwell, especially if you have a high temperature or a new, persistent cough

- vulnerable as a result of medication, a chronic illness or are over 70 years of age

The following restrictions are now in place:

- Visiting between 5pm-6pm only

- No more than 1 visitor per patient, Visitors must be immediate family members or carers.

- No children under 12 will be permitted to visit

Special arrangements are in place if:

- the patient is receiving end-of-life care

- the visitor needs to be accompanied – accompanying visitors should not stay in patient, ward or communal areas, and this applies to inpatient and outpatient settings

- they are a partner and birthing partner accompanying a woman in labour.

Slightly different rules also apply to paediatrics and neonates.

Two visitors are allowed and this may include a child under 12.
