A murder investigation has been launched after a teenager was shot dead in Coventry.

The 19-year-old was found with a serious back injury in Arnside Close, near to the junction of Clifton Street, in Hillfields at just after 2.30pm.

He was taken to hospital where he sadly died soon after.

A police cordon had been set up on a number of streets around Arnside Close, including Clifton Street, Harnall Lane East and King William Street.

Chief Inspector Scott Griffiths, from West Midlands Police's homicide team, said: “I am appealing for anyone with information on today’s shooting to get in touch with us as soon as possible."

He added: “We are committed to finding those responsible and would urge anyone with dashcam or phone footage of what happened before or after the incident to speak to us.

“We are interested in hearing from anyone who saw a black VW Golf R, with light coloured or silver wing mirrors and five-spoke alloy wheels, in the area acting suspiciously too."

Anyone with information can contact West Midlands Police via its Live Chat at http://www.west-midlands.police.uk between 8am and midnight, or call 101 anytime, quoting log 2362 of March 13.

This city gets worse by the day. 19 and 15?
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Coventry gang members convicted of shotgun murder near nursery

Two men have been convicted of murder in the latest tragic episode of gang violence in Coventry.

A gunman, aged 19 at the time, and his getaway driver, then aged 15, have both been found guilty of the murder of Abdul Xasan in March this year.

A court order prevents the media from naming the youth because of his age, while the older defendant cannot be identified for legal reasons.

Mr Xasan was gunned down as he walked along Harnall Lane into Adelaide Street in Hillfields just after 2.30pm on March 13 this year.

Police said he had just left Friday prayers at a mosque and was walking home when he was blasted in the back with a pump-action shotgun.

A trial at Birmingham Crown Court was told 19-year-old Mr Xasan was killed by shots fired from a stolen Volkswagen Golf R in the Hillfields area of Coventry.

Unknown to the killers, their ankle-worn tags - used to police a curfew while they were under investigation for other crimes - showed them at the murder scene at the time of the shooting.

CCTV evidence and mobile phone cell-site data were also used to track the pair's movements.

Officers believe both defendants were members of Coventry's C2 gang, which has been engaged in a long-running series of violent clashes with a rival group.

The shooting was described as a "horrendous" offence by detectives, unfolding as parents waited to pick up their children from a nearby nursery.

The defendants were linked to the C2 gang in Coventry while the Mr Xasan – who’d been arrested just days before the murder for possessing an imitation gun – was connected to a rival group known as RB7.

Now aged 20 and 16, both men will be sentenced on December 22.

Baby-faced killer named as pair jailed for life over drive-by shooting

Image

A teenage boy and a young man have been jailed for life for the fatal drive-by shooting of teenager Abdul Xasan.

Riaz Ahmed was just 15 when, along with a then 19-year-old man, he conspired to kill Abdul in Coventry last year.

Ahmed was driving a stolen VW Golf when the gunman – who cannot be named for legal reasons – opened fire from the back seats in broad daylight.

Both offenders were convicted of murder last month and today (Friday) have been jailed for life.

Ahmed – now aged 16 – must serve a minimum of 18 years in youth detention followed by prison, while his accomplice, who is now 20, will spend at least 27 years behind bars.

Due to Ahmed’s age he couldn't previously be identified, but a judge at Birmingham Crown Court today lifted reporting restrictions allowing him to be named.

Drive-by Coventry gangland shooting killer identified for first time

Image

Police have finally been able to name a man who shot a teenager dead in Coventry as part of a gangland feud - nine months after he was jailed for life.

Police have been able to name Carren Monga - and release an image of the killer - after a judge lifted reporting restrictions that had been imposed earlier this year.

Monga, 19, opened fire at Abdul Xasan from the back of a stolen Volkswagen Golf in March 2020.

When he was jailed in January this year Monga was told he would spend a minimum of 27 years behind bars.

At the time Monga was sentenced police were able to name his 15-year-old accomplice Riaz Ahmed, who was driving the Golf used in the drive-by shooting.

But Monga had outstanding court matters against him and the judge imposed an identify ban on the gunman.

Monga was sentenced last Friday (October 15) on two counts of conspiracy to burgle and the judge has accepted a police appeal to lift the order which prevented Monga being named in January.

Monga shot Mr Xasan, 19, as he walked in Harnall Lane, Hillfields just after 2.30pm on March 13 2020.

A post mortem examination revealed Mr Xasan suffered two gunshot wounds to his back which caused catastrophic internal injuries. He died in the street.

Ahmed, now aged 16, is serving a minimum of 18 years in youth detention followed by prison for his part in Mr Xasan’s killing.

Both he and Monga were linked to the C2 gang in Coventry while Mr Xasan, who had been arrested just days before the murder for possessing an imitation gun, was connected to a rival group known as RB7.

Monga and Ahmed denied murder but following a four week trial at Birmingham Crown Court they were found guilty of conspiracy to murder.

Monga received jail terms of 24 and 36 months for the Coventry burglary conspiracy – he struck at addresses in Beake Avenue, Greens Road and Boswell Drive in Coventry – which will run concurrently to his life sentence.

Coventry man sentenced after torching car used in drive-by murder of teenager Abdul Xasan

Image

A 20-year-old man from Coventry who is already in jail has had his sentence extended by four years after police uncovered his involvement in the brutal murder of Abdul Wahid Xasan. Otis Collier, 20, and an accomplice torched a VW Golf that was used in the fatal shooting.

Mr Xasan, 19, from Foleshill, was shot in the back in broad daylight as he walked along Harnall Lane towards Adelaide Street in Hillfields in March 2020. Eight months later, child getaway driver Riaz Ahmed and 19-year-old Carren Monga, from Longford, who fired the fatal shots through the window of the Golf, were both jailed for life.

Collier, from Coventry, denied assisting offenders but was found guilty last Wednesday (June 29). He was jailed for four years on Thursday (June 30) which will run consecutively to the nine years he is already serving for unrelated matters.

Collier hoped torching the car would hinder the police investigation into the drive-by killing of 19-year-old Abdul. However, detectives managed to find shotgun cartridges in the burned-out shell which ballistics experts matched to spent cartridges recovered from the murder scene on Adelaide Street.

Police discovered that Collier agreed to meet Ahmed shortly after the shooting and drove him home in a blue Ford Focus. Officers found lots of phone calls between the pair before the car was set on fire at around 8pm that night.

Collier claimed it was a conversation about the sale of a bike but police believe that he and Ahmed were arranging for the car to be torched. Detectives also found images in a folder called “For my eyes only” on the phone of Collier which contained photographs of two men in balaclavas inside the stolen VW Golf that were taken just minutes before the car was destroyed.

Collier, from Portsea Close in Coventry, denied assisting offenders but was found guilty by a jury at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday, June 29. He was jailed for four years at the same court on Thursday (June 30) which will run consecutively to the nine years he is already serving for unrelated matters.
