Barclays branches in Coventry and Nuneaton are shut as part of a Greenpeace climate protest today.

Staff and customers at the High Street branch in the city centre and at the Market Place branch in Nuneaton town centre cannot get inside today (March 2).

This is because Greenpeace activists have hit the stores as part of a nationwide shut down on the banking chain.

In Nuneaton there are reports that glue and nails were put in the locks, leaving staff unable to get in and queues of people waiting outside.

Almost 100 branches have been targeted nationwide, including nearby Birmingham and Hinckley.

Greenpeace activists this morning (March 2) say that the UK shutdown is in protest against the bank’s continued multi-billion dollar support for fossil fuels.

Greenpeace say Barclays is the biggest funder of fossil fuels among European banks.

Activists are demanding it stops propping up oil, gas and coal companies and channels funding into renewable energy.

In a statement, Greenpeace said: "In the early hours of the morning, Barclays branches in Birmingham, Coventry Leicester, Nuneaton and Hinckley were rendered out of action by Greenpeace activists who disabled the doors preventing staff from entering.

"This was part of an action which saw 100 branches targeted in locations ranging from Portsmouth to Dundee.

"At each of the branches targeted, images of Barclays customers bearing slogans such as Barclays Climate Criminals, Stop Funding Fossil Fuels and Stop Funding the Climate Emergency were plastered on branch windows."
