Christmas bin collections could be scrapped

So, because they can't run the proverbial in a brewery...

Christmas bin collections in Coventry could be scrapped this year, after the service had problems for a second year running.

People living in the city reported missed collections in 2018 and 2019 and the local authority admitted it didn't have enough staff to carry out the work.

The city council closes over Christmas, so bin collectors aren't contracted to work and its appeal for 30 drivers and 70 collectors wasn't met, with just 16 drivers and 42 collectors turning up last year.

Because only 18% were council staff, the local authority had to spend £95,000 on agency workers.

Now the council is looking at its options. Solutions being suggested include forcing staff to work over Christmas, or scrapping the service and issuing people with heavy-duty bin bags instead.

Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.
