Plans are to be put forward to build 56 new homes in Keresley on the site of a former social club, which once had more than 18,000 members.

The Coventry Colliery and Keresley Sports and Social Club off Bennett’s Road was demolished in February 2013, after running into financial difficulties.

It had once been a busy and bustling social club, initially catering for workers at the Coventry Colliery and their families.

Plans have been announced by Partner Construction to develop the site in partnership with Midland Heart and create 56 ‘affordable homes’.

The company has written to local residents in advance of submitting a planning application to Coventry City Council, saying the scheme will provide a range of homes which will enable young people and families to move into their first home.

The company is inviting local people to a consultation event taking place at Keresley Community Library later this month.

The Coventry Colliery Sports & Social Club, which once boasted 18,000 members, was demolished in February 2013 after spiralling into debt.

When closed in 2012 it had been racking up losses of up to £500 a day.

Membership at the club dropped from 18,000 in its heyday to just 300 prior to its closure.

At its height the club was considered by many to be the heart of Keresley village, hosting regular entertainment and private celebrations.

There were also football and bowling teams and the club was renowned for its performance by pipers on New Year’s Day each year.
