A man beat the disabled neighbour of his girlfriend so badly during a drunken attack that one side of his face was completely covered by bruises.

The victim - who uses a walking stick and has carers to look after him twice a day - had asked Gareth Evans to stop as he kept banging on his girlfriend's door, pleading with him that their were children inside.

But Evans launched a vicious attack on the man, punching him three times to the head and then stamping on him as he laid on the ground.

The 32-year-old, of Bede Road, Bedworth, pleaded guilty to assaulting his victim, causing him actual bodily harm.

The vulnerable man has since had trouble sleeping, and is afraid to open the door in case his attacker is there.

Unmoved by Evans' weeping apologies from the dock, judge Sylvia de Bertodano jailed him for 16 months at Warwick Crown Court.

Jailing Evans, who sat in the dock weeping and repeatedly saying he was sorry, the judge told him: “You were banging on the door of your girlfriend’s house, and her neighbour came out and told you to stop.

“You shouted at him, and he went back in, but a few minutes later you were banging on his door, and when it was opened you punched him three times to the head.

“You continued assaulting him on the ground, stamping on his head and body and face.

“He is a disabled man who walks with a stick and who has carers to look after him twice a day. He was disabled, and you knew he was disabled.

“He had really terrible bruising to his face. I have seen the photographs. On one side of his face you can only see bruises, and no clear skin at all.

“I accept this was completely out of character. But the message must go out that if a man goes round to a disabled man’s address and assaults him in this way, it must be an immediate sentence of imprisonment.”
