The Town Hall is the latest to declare a climate emergency - but there was a debate

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has pledged to be carbon neutral by 2030.

The Town Hall has declared a climate emergency and has said it urgently needs to take action to reduce its emissions.

Council leader councillor Julie Jackson tabled a motion which asked all councillors to back the pledge to make improvements to help the environment.

It included setting up a working party which, in four months time, would bring back proposals on what action the council could take.

This was seconded by Conservative councillor Kyle Evans, who then proposed a raft of amendments, eight in total, which he said the council could act on straight away to start making a difference.

They were:

  • Review the current green bin charge as he claims it is causing mass fly-tipping of green waste around the borough.
  • Ask why the parks department did not bid for the government's 'Urban Tree Challenge' fund.
  • Appoint a climate change champion at director level.
  • Ban the use of single plastics at the Town Hall in Nuneaton and at the Civic Hall in Bedworth.
  • Glendale to install communal composting bins in the borough.
  • The planning department to produce a light pollution strategy.
  • A report be collated outlining what steps the council intends to take in regards to introducing electric vehicles into its fleet and the use of renewable energy.
  • Reports to show what progress the council has made in reducing its carbon footprint.

The amendments were seconded by Cllr Kris Wilson, who said:"All of the proposals are strong, they are significant and they add weight and, more importantly, action to the motion.

"Lets back up our words with deeds."

Green Party councillor Keith Kondakor said that 'big impacts' such as planning issues and traffic have to be dealt with, as well as plastic bags.

"We already have an emergency, it is like a bicycle going down a hill with no pedals, you know there is going to be a big crash so you put your feet down to try and slow it," he said.

Cllr Damon Brown said the amendments: "Walk the walk instead of talk the talk" but Cllr Ian Lloyd said while some 'good valid points' had been made, such decisions could not be made on a whim and they said they should be discussed by the working party.

Cllr Julie Jackson described the amendments as a 'shopping list' and said she could not support them, adding that the working party needed to look through all options.

The amendments were put to the vote with 12 in favour, 15 against and four abstentions.

A debate then took place on the original motion with Cllr Wilson saying to Labour councillors: "We could have had some definitive action now, that is something we could have agree on, this is the second best option.

"Yet again we have been let down by Labour and its lack of leadership in the chamber."

It just goes to show how far removed councillors are from ordinary people.

How do they think Nuneaton and Bedworth were built?
