A town is in shock this afternoon as detectives launched a murder investigation after the death of a 21-year-old man.

The man is believed to have been stabbed in the early hours of this morning in Poplar Road, Solihull.

Forensic teams are at the site and part of the road has been cordoned off - with police warning that it is likely to remain so for the rest of the day.

Officers have launched an appeal for any witnesses to come forward to help with the investigation.

A number of businesses remain closed today and public transport has been affected.

Buses are being diverted onto Lode Lane, but the rest of the town centre is still accessible. Popworld, Zizzi, Yates, Lloyd's Bank and O'Neill's, which are all in the section of the road that has been closed by police, are closed.

Forensics teams have been seen placing items in brown bags as part of the investigation.

A 21-year-old stabbed to death near a Solihul nightclub has been named as police appeal to five men involved in the fatal incident to come forward.

Jack Donoghue was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being knifed outside Pop World at around 3am yesterday morning (Saturday, November 30).

He died a short while later.

A murder investigation has now been launched, with forensic officers seen gathering evidence at the site yesterday.

The crime scene is likely to be in place for the rest of the day as forensic investigations continue.

CCTV is also being extensively reviewed by officers.

Inspector Jim Mahon from the West Midlands Police homicide team revealed the force was looking for five men involved in the altercation.

He said: "Investigations are in the early stages and we are still trying to piece together what happened and the motive behind this attack.

“What we do know so far, is that five men were involved, none of whom were known to Mr Donoghue, and we want to appeal directly to any of those men to do the right thing and hand themselves in.

“We believe they will have confided with family and friends and urge anyone with information to help us with our enquiry.

"Jack’s family are understandably distraught at his loss and our thoughts remain with them.

“Finally, we want to thank everybody who has contacted us so far, the information provided will be invaluable to our investigation, and we continue to ask for anyone who hasn’t yet got in touch to contact us.”

Jack's family have paid tribute to their son following the tragic events, saying "his laughter and smile filled every room".

The full statement reads: “The family are devastated that Jack, our fun loving, doting son has been stolen from us.

“His laughter and smile filled every room. He had a massive heart and he loved and cared for his family and friends. He would do anything for anyone.

“We are thankful to have had so many beautiful memories of our amazing boy. We will miss him deeply and treasure our memories, but our family will never be the same.

“We are appealing to anyone who knows anything about what happened to our Jack to come forward with any information that may help the police to give us answers we desperately need”.
