Sandbags have been put out after heavy rain caused a river bursting its banksVillages have been hit by flooding after a day of torrential rain across Coventry and Warwickshire.
Some roads have been left almost impassable, with rivers bursting their banks and standing water creating perilous conditions for drivers.
Homes at risk of flooding have put out sandbags in preparation.
Wolston, which sits close to the River Avon, has been badly hit, with floods on roads heading into and out of the village, and the brook running through the centre of the village bursting its banks.
The scenes at the river itself are similar, with flood water drenching surrounding fields.
With its location so close to the river, villagers – particularly those closest to the brook – are no strangers to high water, but it’s been a long time since it was this bad.
Jamie Gascoigne and Kerry Bradley, who live on Main Street in Wolston, were shocked to return home from work to find the water in the brook over the banks.
They both leave for work early – before the impact of today’s weather became apparent.
Kerry said: “We had no idea this was going to happen. We had quite a lot of rain a few months ago and the brook got quite high, but not so bad as this.
“I think a neighbour must have put the sandbags out - it’s a really nice thing to do.”
Community spirit is alive and well in the village; this is something they do regularly in a village that often suffers from flooding.
But despite the frequency, Mr Nicholls said these floods are the worst they’ve seen in over 20 years.
“In 1997 the water was so high it came in the house,” he said.
“After that, Severn Trent did a lot of remedial work and it’s never happened since then.
“It does seem to have come up very quickly this time, and although this is the worst it’s been in a while, it seems to be happening more often.”
