UK set for 12 December general election after MPs' vote

Image

The UK is set to go to the polls on 12 December after MPs backed Boris Johnson's call for an election following months of Brexit deadlock.

By a margin of 438 votes to 20, the House of Commons approved legislation paving the way for the first December election since 1923.

The bill is still to be approved by the Lords but could become law by the end of the week.

If that happens, there will be a five-week campaign up to polling day.

More than 100 Labour MPs did not take part or abstained in Tuesday's crucial vote, while 11 voted against an election. A total of 127 Labour MPs, including Mr Corbyn, supported the election.

The Liberal Democrats and the SNP signalled their support for an election earlier this week, arguing it was now the best way of stopping Brexit.

Mr Corbyn announced earlier on Monday that he now backed the idea because the EU's decision to delay Brexit for three months had taken a no-deal departure off the table.

There's nothing I'd rather do two weeks before Christmas than trudge to the polling station!

I suspect that the turnout will be either very high, or very low: I don't see any middle ground.

I also suspect that we'll be no better off afterwards than we are now. I reckon another hung parliament, unless one of the parties makes a real hash of things.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

I only see two possible outcomes:

1) A Johnson victory and Brexit in name only with Britain paying tens of billions to the EU while still being ruled by Brussels

2) A hung parliament and the deadlock continuing.

Winter elections traditionally favour the Tories as older people are more likely to make the effort to vote in poor weather. It's complicated this time though as many of them could vote for the genuine Brexit Party led by Nigel Farage.

My polling card arrived today. I don't envy the person who had to deliver it and if the weather on Polling Day is anything like today I'm unlikely to make a special journey to vote in a ward where Labour is a guaranteed shoe-in regardless of how I vote in any case.

Just received an election leaflet from the Tories which does nothing but draw attention to their failures over the past ten years! :clown:

Mrs R has had a Brexit leaflet and one from Labour. I've had nothing!
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Labour's wasn't much of an improvement. At first sight I thought it was an advert for Taekwando classes! :clown:

(We do get those sometimes)

Conservatives post red-top Socialist-style pamphlet to Coventry South voters

Image

AN APPARENT Conservative election publication designed in the style of a red-top socialist pamphlet has been condemned by Coventry South contender Zarah Sultana.

The Labour candidate tweeted a photo of the paper’s front page this afternoon, saying: “Coventry South Tories have produced and distributed this sheet of propaganda masquerading as a local newspaper. These are dishonest fake-news Trump tactics.

“It’s clear what Tories take Coventry South voters for – Will the Tory candidate apologise and withdraw this fake newspaper?”

The Conservatives nationally are pinning their hopes on wooing traditionally Labour voters in solid Labour seats, who voted Leave in the 2016 EU referendum.

Coventry voters voted to leave by 55 per cent, to 45 per cent for Remain.

The newspaper front page carries the Boris Johnson-style headline “Brexit deal agreed and ready to go.”

It is called ‘Coventry South Future’, with the strapline “Getting on with Coventry South’s priorities.”

A Conservative Party spokesman said: “This type of literature is commonly used by parties up and down the country and meets all the relevant laws and guidelines.

“It’s a useful way to highlight our excellent Coventry South candidate, Mattie Heaven, and update local residents on our plans to get Brexit done and focus on people’s priorities like the NHS, schools and policing.”

The seat needs an 8.5 per cent from Labour to Conservative for a Tory victory in the seat previously held by Jim Cunningham.

Mrs R has cast her vote (postal) and I think I know what I'm going to do, unless anything startling happens.

Had Mrs R read last night's Telegraph, I suspect she may have actually voted differently.
Of course it'll fit; you just need a bigger hammer.

Received a second Labour leaflet this morning!

It added nothing to the first leaflet. Apparently 'global warming' is the biggest concern of everyone in north-west Coventry? :clown:

No mention of Jeremy Corbyn or any of his more controversial policies in the leaflet. I can't think why?
