UK set for 12 December general election after MPs' vote
The UK is set to go to the polls on 12 December after MPs backed Boris Johnson's call for an election following months of Brexit deadlock.
By a margin of 438 votes to 20, the House of Commons approved legislation paving the way for the first December election since 1923.
The bill is still to be approved by the Lords but could become law by the end of the week.
If that happens, there will be a five-week campaign up to polling day.
More than 100 Labour MPs did not take part or abstained in Tuesday's crucial vote, while 11 voted against an election. A total of 127 Labour MPs, including Mr Corbyn, supported the election.
The Liberal Democrats and the SNP signalled their support for an election earlier this week, arguing it was now the best way of stopping Brexit.
Mr Corbyn announced earlier on Monday that he now backed the idea because the EU's decision to delay Brexit for three months had taken a no-deal departure off the table.

Conservatives post red-top Socialist-style pamphlet to Coventry South voters
AN APPARENT Conservative election publication designed in the style of a red-top socialist pamphlet has been condemned by Coventry South contender Zarah Sultana.
The Labour candidate tweeted a photo of the paper’s front page this afternoon, saying: “Coventry South Tories have produced and distributed this sheet of propaganda masquerading as a local newspaper. These are dishonest fake-news Trump tactics.
“It’s clear what Tories take Coventry South voters for – Will the Tory candidate apologise and withdraw this fake newspaper?”
The Conservatives nationally are pinning their hopes on wooing traditionally Labour voters in solid Labour seats, who voted Leave in the 2016 EU referendum.
Coventry voters voted to leave by 55 per cent, to 45 per cent for Remain.
The newspaper front page carries the Boris Johnson-style headline “Brexit deal agreed and ready to go.”
It is called ‘Coventry South Future’, with the strapline “Getting on with Coventry South’s priorities.”
A Conservative Party spokesman said: “This type of literature is commonly used by parties up and down the country and meets all the relevant laws and guidelines.
“It’s a useful way to highlight our excellent Coventry South candidate, Mattie Heaven, and update local residents on our plans to get Brexit done and focus on people’s priorities like the NHS, schools and policing.”
The seat needs an 8.5 per cent from Labour to Conservative for a Tory victory in the seat previously held by Jim Cunningham.
