It will support an unknown new retailer

An eyesore plot of vacant land in Coventry is to be turned into a new 19-space car park - to help attract a new name to an adjoining retail unit.

Planning permission has been granted by the city council to redevelop the land adjacent to 1 Hall Green Road in Bell Green.

The car park will be utilised by the adjoining retail unit currently occupied by Bet Fred.

But the retailer is due to change and a car park is hoped to help attract a new name.

Council planning officer Liam D’Onofrio said: “The applicant has provided supporting information which states that it is intended that the car park is to be used exclusively for the adjoining retail unit, with no form of paid parking anticipated.

“The existing tenants (Bet Fred) will not be renewing their lease and the applicant is seeking to make the re-letting of the site more appealing with the provision of on-site parking.”

The vacant land has become overgrown in recent years and subject to fly-tipping.

Mr D’Onofrio added: “The application site relates to a vacant plot of hard standing, currently part enclosed by Heras fencing and is formed by hard-standing and overgrown scrub with evidence of fly-tipping.

“The land has been unoccupied for a considerable period of time and enforcement action has been taken previously under s.215 to secure improvements to the appearance of the land.”

The car park will be accessed off Bellview Way, a residential cul-de-sac.

Mr D’Onofrio said comings and goings “should be largely absorbed into the busy streetscene”, but an access barrier and a car park management plan has been imposed in conditions to ensure the car park is properly managed and not used out of retail opening hours.
