An investigation is underway into whether a parking deal for gym-goers in Nuneaton has contributed to a £9,000 shortfall in parking revenue.

Concerns have been raised about the offer which allows Pure Gym members two hours of free parking at the Ropewalk car park.

Council bosses say they are looking into 'issues' surrounding the two-hour free usage and how it is being used.

CouncIllor Neil Phillips, cabinet member for parking, made the revelation after being asked by Cllr Keith Kondakor about the financial impact of the deal with the gym at a meeting at the Town Hall.

"I believe the present figure of being down on that car park is £9,000 but there are other issues which being investigated in regards to the free usage of the car park," Cllr Phillips said.

"Free usage for the first two hours and the way it operates is something that we are a little bit concerned about."

But he went on to explain: "The shortfall in that car park isn't just down to the gym, there are footfall issues within the town, even though we are improving and transforming the town, there are still issues of people coming into town and using our car parks.

"All of our other car parks are up, the two that tend to drop are the Co-op and the Ropewalk, but it has been noted."

Car parking income, which has been at the centre of rows since prices were increased in 2016, is not the only town centre-related income shortfall being faced by the Town Hall.
