Part of Far Gosford Street in Coventry was sealed off on Saturday and there was a heavy police presence after a shotgun was fired in the early hours of the morning.

Armed police responded swiftly but by the time they arrived at the scene the parties involved in the incident had fled the scene.

A 36-year-old Warwickshire man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm but he was later released without charge and police said no further action would be taken against him.

Although no one was injured in the incident a detective said that West Midlands Police would

“not tolerate guns being fired on our streets”.

The shotgun was fired from a car shortly before 2.50am on Saturday.

Police said it happened near the Sainsbury’s store and the store remained closed into the morning while investigations were carried out..

Far Gosford Street is a busy thoroughfare close to the city centre with bars, restaurants and takeaways and other retail outlets.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Police were called to Far Gosford Street, Coventry just before 2.50am this morning after a shotgun was discharged from a dark coloured car.

“Although officers were at the scene within minutes, all parties had fled.

“The incident happened close to Sainsbury’s and the store remained closed this morning while investigations were carried out.”

Sergeant Rory Juss from Force CID said: “Although no one was injured we simply do not tolerate guns being fired on our streets.

“This would have been very concerning for people in the area at the time and we’d urge them to help us catch those responsible.”

Later in the day a West Midlands Police spokesman said: “The 36-year-old man arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm has been released from custody.

“Detectives have eliminated him from the enquiry and he will face no further action.”

Police said the investigation is ongoing and any witnesses or anyone with information has been urged to come forward.
