Coventry's Sikh community will begin planting hundreds of new trees in the city this weekend in a bid to tackle climate change.

An impressive 550 new trees and shrubs are set for Longford Park as part of the project.

As well as aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the city, the new trees will also mark the 550th birth-anniversary of the first Sikh Guru and founder of the faith, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

The first load will be planted on Sunday (October 6) as part of the annual Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Charity Walk, which will also be raising funds to plant the full amount there by November 12.

Now in its 34th consecutive year, the family event starts at 10am.

Hundreds are expected to take part in the 15km charity walk.

It will start from the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara on Cross Road, Foleshill.

Palvinder Singh Chana, chairman of the Sikh Union Coventry, said: “We are immensely proud to be holding the 34th Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Charity Walk through the streets of Coventry.

“This is an amazing opportunity for anyone committed to help tackle climate change and make a major contribution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for our city.

"Climate change is possibly one of the most serious environmental threats facing our world today. Through His teachings, our first guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, explained that the world we humans create around ourselves is a reflection of our own inner state.”

Chairperson of the Friends of Longford , Kerry Bigham added: “Coventry is a city that thrives off unique partnerships and collaborations.

"We are delighted to be participating in a global initiative in conjunction with the Eco-Sikh project to commemorate the 550th birth-anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

“The charity walk, now in its 34th year, will be donating all its funds to provide a commemorative woodland, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come whilst celebrating our city’s wonderful green spaces.”

The Lord Mayor of Coventry, Councillor Linda Bigham, will be performing the ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the of start the walk.
