A homeless man in Coventry who was offered a job after a begging fine led to public backlash is yet to start work - but is using new accommodation.

Coventry City Council offered Gary Cannop temporary accommodation and a four-week cleaning job after an initial fine for begging sparked public outcry.

A spokesman for the authority said Gary has told them he has been using the city centre accommodation since the offer was made in July but – as of yesterday (August 1) – had yet to complete a medical enabling him to start work as a cleaner.

A council spokesman said: “We have met with Gary via our homelessness service and found temporary accommodation for him around the corner from Smithford Way.

“We are continuing to keep in touch with him to understand if he is regularly using the accommodation.

“Gary is still in the alley early in the morning and late at night.

“He has cancelled appointments for two medicals for the potential job offer that had been discussed with him, a further appointment has now been arranged for next week.

“Obviously this is an important part of the application process.

“We continue to engage where possible with all rough sleepers in the city including Gary.”

The 55-year-old was fined £60 by a council officer last month while reading a book in an alleyway off Smithford Way, where he sleeps, but this has now been rescinded.
