Shoppers and staff were evacuated from the Morrison’s supermarket on the Alvis retail park on Saturday afternoon after a fire broke out.

The fire is understood to have taken place in the electrical plant room at the Holyhead Road store.

A fire crew and a support unit from Coventry central fire station attended the incident.

An engineer from Western Power Distribution was also in attendance.

The evacuation took place shortly before 3pm.

The fire was not believed to be serious but staff from the store remained outside in the main car park in the front of the store while fire service checks continued.

Shoppers who left the store dispersed but shoppers arriving were informed by security staff in the car park that the store was closed.

Motorists wishing to get petrol from the Morrison’s filling station were still able to access it but the main car park remained closed, with Morrison’s security staff redirecting traffic.

More than an hour after the evacuation the store remained closed though staff were allowed to go back inside at around 4pm.

That place was in a poor state of repair before the fire. There were sheets hanging from the ceiling, freezer cabinets broken down and a fire exit at the side blocked off.

It was even worse today with empty cabinets and water all over the floor.

Also has anyone else noticed that when two or more supermarket staff start a conversation they talk as if they haven't seen each other for years and years while a steady queue of customers builds up behind them?
