Armed police officers swarmed Central Six shopping centre in Coventry last night.

The retail park was closed off as police responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle in nearby Station Square, outside Coventry Railway Station.

A number of surrounding roads were also closed and buildings evacuated.

Several shoppers at Central Six reported seeing officers with guns at around 8pm, as well as a number of police cars and vans, and unmarked vehicles.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Police were called to Station Square in Coventry city centre last night (July 11) to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked outside the train station.

"As a precaution, some nearby buildings were evacuated and nearby roads were closed for a short time.

"Nothing suspicious was found and no arrests have been made."

A spokesman for Virgin Trains, who run the railway station, confirmed no train services had been affected.
