A rapist has been jailed for nine years after being found guilty of a 'shocking and cowardly' attack in Nuneaton.

Mark Stephen Partington, aged 29, of Pear Tree Avenue, had denied raping a woman in her 20s but was found guilty by a jury at Warwick Crown Court.

He was sentenced to nine years in jail at the same court on Friday (July 5).

Police have described the attack on his victim at 4.20am on Haunchwood Road as 'shocking and cowardly'.

A resident on the road saw the attack and called police who arrived to arrest Partington - and the Good Samaritan has been praised by officers.

Detective Sergeant Dave Moorman from Nuneaton CID said: "This was a shocking and cowardly attack by Partington. He has been made to pay for his crime.

"Thankfully, due to a witness calling police, officers arrived quickly and detained Partington.

"Women in Nuneaton are safer with him off our streets. The length of the sentence reflects the seriousness of this offence.

"I'd like to pay tribute the victim who has shown immense bravery in supporting this investigation and trial.

"I hope she can take comfort from the seeing Partington behind bars."
