Ambulance bosses have blasted the 'disappointing' sentence given to a man who attacked a paramedic and police officer.

Timothy Clarke, from Bulkington, was handed a 12 month community order after assaulting the emergency workers during an incident in the village on Sunday, June 16.

Now a spokesman for the ambulance service whose worker was attacked has said the punishment highlights the lack of severe punishments given out by courts.

The 46-year-old of Morland Close, Bulkington, appeared at Warwickshire Magistrates Court yesterday (July 2) to be sentenced for the following offences: assault by beating of an emergency worker, one count of common assault on an emergency worker and one count of using threatening, abusive or insulting words to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

He had admitted the charges.

But West Midlands Ambulance Service hit out at the 12 month community order he received.

“Once again we find ourselves extremely disappointed at the sentence handed down by the courts," the WMAS spokesman said.

“It is completely unacceptable that ambulance staff, who are responding to help people in their hour of need, should have to face violence or verbal abuse.

“Unfortunately, we believe that until the courts begin handing out more severe punishments to those committing such acts, there is simply no deterrent to others, and that is extremely frustrating for our staff."
