The Big Victorian Picnic was due to be held on Saturday (June 8) at Leamington’s Pump Room Gardens.

Warwick District Council was hosting the free event to mark the completion of the £1.4million renovation of the historic gardens including the bandstand.

But torrential rains forced organisers to cancel the event.

The council is still deciding whether to reschedule the event.

And for the first time in its near 50-year history the Kenilworth Lions Grand Show had to be cancelled on Saturday.

The waterlogged state of the ground in Abbey Fields left organisers with no option.

Gordon Henderson, Kenilworth Lions president, said: “We were terribly disappointed to have to cancel the event, for the team of Lions who had put so much work into it, for all the many stall holders, and of course for the general public, who always give us such great support.

“Lions Club members will now decide over the next few weeks whether or not it might be possible to re-schedule something for later in the year.”
