Fallen trees blocked roads and damaged power lines as overnight storms wreaked havoc across Coventry and Warwickshire.

The wild weather caused problems for motorists and rail passengers, with branches coming down across roads and railway lines.

In Nuneaton, Atherstone Road was cordoned off by police at the junction with Nuneaton Road as county council workers cleared the road of a fallen tree.

One worker told our reporter that Balfour Beatty, who provide highway maintenance for Warwickshire County Council, have had to deploy workers to jobs across the county following the stormy weather.

The tree on Atherstone Road was cleared by around 9am, however a chipper will be needed later on today to dispose of the broken branches.

In Kenilworth, the A452 was blocked in both directions between the A46 and the Castle End while a fallen tree at Bullimore Grove was removed.

It caused slow moving traffic on the A46 as motorists were diverted via Leek Wootton.

Several other incidents of fallen trees were reported including on Coalpit Lane in Long Lawton, Spon Lane in Grendon, Tamworth Road in Corley and Wood End Lane near Fillongley.

The weather also caused problems for train passengers in Coventry.

A tree damaged overhead lines between Birmingham New Street and Rugby early this morning.

The line has been cleared however residual delays remain and are expected to cause disruption until around 2.30pm.

Services running between Coventry and Rugby have been suspended and rail replacement coaches are in place shuttling between Coventry and Wellingborough and Northampton.
