Coventry police teams being reduced from 11 to nine

The changes come into force on May 1

The number of policing teams across Coventry is set to reduce from 11 to nine.

The new structure for neighbourhood teams across the city will kick in tomorrow (Wednesday, May 1), however the commander of Coventry Police Mike O'Hara has stated there will be no reduction in the number of officers.

The news was revealed in an email to Coventry councillors by Superintendent Phil Healy, who said the new nine-team structure will see "slightly more officers per team", meaning that minimum staffing "can be determined and achieved" and a "re-balance" of PCs and PCSOs.

The new policing areas, as of May 1, are: St Michaels (three teams); Henley and Longford; Stoke and Wyken; Foleshill; Bablake, Sherbourne, Holbrooks and Radford; Woodlands, Westwood, Wainbody and Whoberley; Binley, Willenhall, Cheylesmore and Earlsdon.

In the email to councillors, Supt Healy said: "As a result of our current resourcing picture, (I also anticipate that our current picture will reduce further over the next 12 months), the current and projected position is making Neighbourhood Policing difficult, as such as a Senior Leadership Team (SLT) it is our intention to reduce the number of Neighbourhood Policing in line with our Force model."

He added: "These changes are necessary to continue for us to try and deliver our Neighbourhood Policing model for Coventry."
