A gang of smash and grab raiders from Coventry who led police on a high speed chase after snatching £132,000 worth of Apple computers and phones have been jailed.

The group attacked the Stormfront Apple showroom in Exeter in the middle of the night and used crowbars and hammers to rip off a security grille and smash the window.

The Romanian gang drove from Coventry in two cars and were intercepted near Bristol after a high speed police chase through Somerset as they headed home.

A Mondeo car was stopped by a police stinger device near Cribbs Causeway while the other CMAX went off the motorway and crashed after taking a blind corner on the wrong side of the road.

Police arrested two men from each car but three others escaped from the CMAX with £62,000 worth of stolen loot.

CCTV showed six masked men entering the shop and returning with green sacks, while the seventh man loaded the cars and stood on the torn-down security grille to hold it down.

The store was equipped with a security feature called a smoke cloak which was released a thick fog inside which was intended to prevent intruders from finding the stock.

It also had a camera which recorded the registration numbers of vehicles and passed them to police automatically, enabling them to start the pursuit on the M5 in Somerset.

Alin Simisanu, 29, his brother Stefanut, 24, both of Station Road, Florin-Marius Dinca, 24, and Gheorghe Ghita, 42, both of whom were sofa surfing in Coventry, all admitted burglary.

Alin Simisanu also admitted a similar burglary in Kettering on Christmas Day at which he left traces of DNA on a filing cabinet.

He was jailed for 21 months, and the others for 16 months by Judge David Evans at Exeter Crown Court.
