An investigation found "unsafe" food was up to 10 days past its use by date
A Coventry supermarket and its owner have been fined a total of more than £26,000 for selling "unsafe" food - including sausages and cooked ham that were up to 10 days past their use by date.
Coventry City Council said trading standards officers made the discovery at the Costcutter, in Far Gosford Street, after they were tipped off by a customer that the shop was selling out of date food.
Among the offending items found in a fridge were sausages, yoghurt, cooked ham and chicken and bacon wraps that were all out of date.
Now owner Mohammed Shazad and Fargo Retail Limited, which was trading as Costcutter, have been fined £26,344 in total.
"Food past its use by date is deemed to be unsafe to eat," a spokesman for Coventry City Council said.
Mr Shazad, 45, had told council officers that he had only just taken over the business.
After an investigation he and the business were both offered a caution but this was turned down and they were both taken to court.
They both pleaded guilty to six offences yesterday on Wednesday, February 20.
The business received four fines of £3,600, totalling £14,400, and was also ordered to pay costs of £1204, along with a victim surcharge of £170.
Mr Shazad also received four fines for £2,600, totalling of £10,400, and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £170.
