Plans to turn a popular Coventry carpet store into a budget hotel have been refused - because the location is not in a "defined centre."

A planning application was submitted to demolish the Carpet Castle building on Willenhall Lane, Binley, and construct a budget hotel in its place.

If approved, a 74 bed hotel, including a fitness room and restaurant were to be constructed, along with 87 car parking spaces.

The plans did not specify which hotel chain would be moving in to this site, though they mentioned that its location would "serve people in transit on the M69/M6/A46/M40 corridors on the eastern side of Coventry."

However, Coventry City Council's planning department refused the application, citing three main reasons.

According to planning documents, the first reason given was that "The application has failed to provide sufficient information to demonstrate that there are not any sequentially preferable sites within existing defined Major District Centres or the City Centre that could accommodate this Main Town Centre use."

The second reason given was that "The application has failed to provide sufficient information to demonstrate that this Main Town Centre Use will not have a detrimental impact on the vitality and viability of existing Major District Centres."

Finally, it was said that "The application has failed to provide sufficient information to demonstrate that the use would be compatible with nearby established industrial and commercial uses."
