But Logan Jackson ended up in court himself – because instead of handing the bullets to the police, he kept them, and they were found when officers later raided the address.

Jackson (28) of no fixed address, and who is said to be in hiding, pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to possessing ammunition without a firearms certificate.

After hearing of the circumstances of the offence, and that Jackson spent four months in prison on remand before getting bail, the judge gave him a conditional discharge for 12 months.

James Doyle, defending, said Jackson, who appeared in court in a wheelchair, and his family were given an Osman Warning [a warning of imminent danger to life] by the police in the summer of 2017.

“That arose because one of his brothers had got into difficulty with a member of a gang called the P1 Gang in Coventry.

“The upshot was that, to a large extent, the defendant had to go into hiding. He says he was threatened by bullets being put through the letterbox.

“His elder brother was viciously attacked in a pub, and his car was then shot at. The defendant himself has been leading a rather nomadic life. He has been shot himself, and has lost his left foot.

“Since his release on bail, he has been living in hiding, but has kept in contact with his solicitors.”

Judge de Bertodano remarked: “There is little I can do with him. I have to accept the basis of plea is correct, and that the only reason he had any possession of these bullets was because he received them as a threat. His culpability is in not passing them to the police.”

And she told Jackson: “You know what’s gone wrong in this case. If someone makes a threat of this sort, you have to involve the police, otherwise it’s you who ends up in trouble, not them.”
