The state of the town's pavements is being criticised

Shoppers, residents and workers deserve better than the state of pavements around Bedworth town centre.

Photographs taken of the paving and trees in the town centre show, according to an incensed councillor, the ‘irresponsible lack of maintenance’ by Warwickshire County Council.

Having read a CoventryLive article about the state of pavements in both Nuneaton and Bedworth town centres, borough councillor Bill Hancox felt compelled to reveal that the situation was not as rosy as the county council was painting out.

“I was extremely concerned reading the WCC spokesperson comments in a recent story defending their highway maintenance within Bedworth town centre,” Cllr Hancox said.

“Clearly, whoever made that comment could never have visited our town.

"To make it worse, most of these examples are in the direct area of their own offices in Kings House, King Street.”

He is calling for urgent action to be taken and has written to both the Leaders of Warwickshire County Council and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council asking them to go on a tour of the town centre to see the damage for themselves.

“Residents, shoppers, workers and visitors deserve better than this,” he said.

A Shire Hall spokesperson said: “WCC officers have recently undertaken a joint safety inspection of Bedworth town centre, incorporating King Street, All Saints Square and High Street.

“The Tarmac areas around the base of highway trees are temporary safety repairs and will be renewed once the materials have been delivered. The empty tree pits have been referred to the forestry team and new trees will be provided during planting season.”
