Bosses at one of Nuneaton's longest running sports shops say they are being forced to move due to the ‘ridiculous’ state of the town centre.

Cannon Sports has stood proudly on the corner of Queens Road and Stratford Street since 1976 – but now the business is moving out.

Matt Lamb, who owns the business with his dad Steve, said it was a ‘difficult decision’ but one in which they have been forced to take.

They took over firm eight years ago and they have seen the business slowly dwindle.

“From when we first took over to now, the drop footfall has been ridiculous, especially the last two years, they have been really hard,” he said.

“Yes, shopping has changed, a lot of people do shop online now but also the town has been left standing for too long, nothing has been done.

"Traffic is so bad as well, the amount of time it takes people to get into town and then park up, they can get to Fosse Park in the same amount of time.

“The big shops are falling away, every week another shop closes and we have done everything that we can to try and stay open but we can’t stay here anymore.”

While he is mourning the move from the town centre location, the future is looking bright for the firm.

They are moving to a new office space on the outskirts of the town centre, it will have a ‘meet and greet’ area for customers and will also offer deliveries locally too.

The lease on the shop comes to an end on March 24, so Cannon Sports will be in the town centre until then.

“For all of our loyal customers, we can’t thank then enough really,” he said.

“We have tried so hard to stay here but it is time now for us to take the business elsewhere.”
