A community campaign has failed to save the closure of Earlsdon’s Lloyds branch, but some bank services could be relocated to the library.

Lloyds closed its High Street branch on January 21 as part of nationwide restructuring efforts, despite campaigning from local residents, including a 1,340-strong petition.

A proposal has been put forward to retain one job role in nearby Earlsdon Library, which would provide a place for customer queries.

Ward councillor Allan Andrews said the plan already has the support of Coventry City Council, pending discussions over the lease.

Cllr Andrews, who has been campaigning on the issue with ward colleagues Cllr Ken Taylor and Cllr Kindy Sandhu, said it would be a “positive” move.

He added: “We are currently working with Lloyds to confirm the logistics of this and it is hoped that this service will be available in the very near future.”

Customers will have their accounts moved to High Street Coventry branch, but a Lloyds spokesman said the proposal to retain one position in the library is under review.

He added: “We made the difficult decision to close the Lloyds Bank Earlsdon Coventry branch due to the changing ways customers choose to bank with us, which resulted in the branch being used less often.

“We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause, customers can continue to access their banking locally by visiting the nearby Post Office, which is less than half a mile from the branch.”
