Hundreds of people have signed a petition calling for changesAction needs to be taken to stop a residential street being used as a “rat run” by Warwick university students, a councillor has said.
A petition signed by 662 people is calling for a crossing near Cannon Park School to address the problem along Cannon Hill Road, in Wainbody. [sic]
Residents also want the council to implement a 20mph limit, physical traffic calming measures and a seven-tonne vehicle weight restriction to stop lorries driving through.
Cllr Tim Sawdon, who is supporting the petition, said: “Cannon Hill Road is being used as a rat run to and from the uni.
“Currently cars are travelling too fast, the school is on a bend and traffic from the Kenilworth side is using it to avoid the Kenilworth Road/A45 lights.”
Section 106 money - cash put up by developers for local infrastructure projects - is available for some of the work as part of the University of Warwick’s new hybrid expansion plan, which was approved by the council in November.
The petition will be heard by the cabinet member for city services at a meeting on Monday, January 21.
A report ahead of the meeting stated there has been one collision on the road in the last three years, which is below the criteria required for a crossing.
“However, this location will be considered for a school-time advisory 20mph speed limit in the 2019/20 programme of works,” it added.
