Apartments could be built on a former church hall to provide ‘key worker’ accommodation within walking distance of University Hospital Coventry.

Plans have been submitted to build a two-and-a-half storey apartment building on the site of Saint Mary’s Hall on Anthol Road in Walsgrave.

The project comprises 18 self-contained apartments, with open plan living areas, kitchen and dining areas, bathrooms, bedrooms, storage and circulation areas.

It is hoped to be used as targeted key worker accommodation for health and care professionals at the hospital, The Birches Retirement Home and BMI Meriden Hospital.

The existing Saint Mary’s Hall was put up for sale in April 2017 and has been vacant since.

A planning statement on behalf of the applicant CT Estates Ltd said re-use of the site is classed as brownfield for change to residential.

Given its proximity to the two hospitals and retirement home, the development could also be used “to promote walking, cycling and public transport use”, it added.

It continued: “The proposal has had two pre-application sessions with Coventry City Council, both with a positive response.”

A public consultation on the proposal ends on January 25.
