Police cars were seen driving through the city at speed yesterday while joined by the police helicopter circling above.

Marked and unmarked cars were seen and heard on the ring road and in a number of roads in Cheylesmore.

The police helicopter was also circling the Radford and city centre areas.

It took place around 3pm on New Year's Eve with a number of people on social media wondering what the police presence was for.

CoventryLive was told by NPAS Birmingham (National Police Air Service) helicopter that they were deployed to a pursuit of a suspected stolen motor vehicle in the area.

West Midlands Police have now released more details of what happened.

The vehicle failed to stop for police and is suspected to be stolen.

It was pursued on to the ring road towards the A45 before heading into Radford Road, Light Lane, Sandy Lane and Widdington Road.

The car is then believed to have stopped, with the driver thought to have escaped on foot.

Police say the car has been seized.

The helicopter was seen circling above the Canal Basin and Radford.
