An iconic Nuneaton landmark looks set to be stubbed out from the skyline permanently.

The giant no smoking chimney in the grounds of the George Eliot Hospital is set to be demolished.

Its creation in the 80s put the town on the map, being the biggest no smoking advert in the UK.

But now the giant cigarette, which has been a talking point for many, is set to be left to ashes.

A planning application has been submitted to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, seeking permission to pull the giant chimney down.

In the planning statement, it says: "Works on site generally include taking down the steel chimney to site and the steel frame to the side of the chimney.

"All waste materials shall be disposed of into the appropriate covered waste skip containers, which shall be removed from site."

The chimney, which is on the former boiler house site, is set to be taken down to slab level.

Also, according to the planning application, works are due to start on February 4 next year and will take two weeks.

But it will be down to the Town Hall to decide if the demolition is given the go-ahead.
